Are Nigeria’s Mainstream Media Hiding the Truth? Citizens Say Propaganda Is Winning

A growing wave of Nigerians is calling out the country’s mainstream media for what they see as a dangerous role in spreading propaganda while silencing the truth.

According to critics, many of the country’s top media houses have become mouthpieces for political and economic elites. Their long-standing reputations make them seem trustworthy but some citizens now believe that very trust is being abused.

“The mainstream are the real problem,” one citizen told Dobblog. “People believe them just because of the name. Meanwhile, those who are sharing real information are ignored or called fake.”

This distrust is pushing more Nigerians to turn to independent blogs, social media channels, and underground news pages in search of raw, unfiltered stories. But even there, the struggle is real. Independent voices often face online censorship, algorithm suppression, or attacks aimed at discrediting them.

The rise of digital media in Nigeria has created new opportunities for truth-telling but also new challenges in verifying credibility. Still, many say they would rather take a chance on alternative platforms than rely on what they now see as a broken system.

As debates continue around media freedom, censorship, and political influence in journalism, Nigerians are raising a vital question:

Who controls the truth and who’s brave enough to speak it?
