Tension is high in Rivers State this afternoon as dozens of women have taken to the streets of Port Harcourt, protesting half-naked against the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The protest, which is still ongoing as of 1:30PM, started around the GRA junction and has now reached the front of the Rivers State Government House. Many of the women mostly elderly are dressed in black, some stripped from the waist up, chanting and praying in local languages.
“This is not protest, this is a cry from our spirits,” one of the women shouted, kneeling on the road and waving palm fronds.
“We want peace, not soldiers. Fubara is our choice!”
Security agents have arrived on the scene but are keeping their distance. The atmosphere remains tense, but peaceful for now.
This comes weeks after President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy, and members of the House of Assembly, following a heated political face-off.
But today’s protest has shifted the narrative from politics to something far deeper a cultural, emotional outcry.
Some of the handwritten placards read:
“Rivers Women Say No to Abuja Interference”
“We Voted Fubara, Respect Our Votes”
“No Peace Without Justice in Rivers State”
Residents in the area have been advised to avoid the Government House axis for now due to growing crowd movement.
This is a developing story. More updates to follow.
