In a heated turn of events, northern Nigerians have taken to social media to express outrage over a statement made by online personality VeryDarkMan (VDM), after he made what many are calling a deeply disrespectful comment about the Sultan of Sokoto.
The controversy erupted during one of VDM’s unscripted video rants, where he addressed political tensions in the North. But things took a sharp turn when he allegedly made a dismissive reference to the Sultan a move that has sparked widespread anger and cultural backlash.
“Talk too much, and you say what you shouldn’t,” said Abdulazeez Lawal, a youth advocate in Kaduna. “VDM may be bold, but even boldness must come with wisdom. The Sultan represents more than a title he embodies northern heritage, unity, and tradition.”
Since the video surfaced, a wave of criticism has hit social platforms. Hashtags like #RespectTheThrone and #VDMDisrespectsSultan are now trending across X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and Facebook. Prominent northern influencers have called for VDM to take responsibility and issue a public apology.
Some community based organizations are planning virtual forums and open discussions, urging young people to recognize the difference between freedom of speech and cultural provocation. One youth coalition in Kano even released a statement warning public figures against “using social clout to attack sacred institutions.”

At the time of this report, VDM has not responded or addressed the calls for an apology. Attempts to reach his team for comments were unsuccessful.
Meanwhile, sources close to the Sultanate say the Sultan is aware of the situation but has chosen not to make a public statement. According to a palace insider, “His Highness values peace and has advised against retaliation or online insults. He believes the truth will speak for itself.”
This incident is reigniting national conversations around the boundaries of online influence, the respect of traditional institutions, and the responsibility that comes with having a platform.
